Folklórico
A British girl with Mexican heritage in Sheffield discovers more about her roots and learns to accept her mixed heritage after the death of her grandmother.

The edition is digitally reproduced from a prototype with screen-printed background pages, with the text flowing in bubbles over the page and a cover from stitched together warp-faced woven bands.
The story is told in the form of a screenplay and its main character is Isabella from Sheffield. She just finished school, and it’s her dream to make it as a contemporary dancer, while her parents would prefer for her to go to university and study – maybe law. When her grandmother dies, she leaves her a task which leads to Isabella discovering her Mexican roots and embrace them. But instead of becoming a traditional dancer herself, she finds her own unique way.

The flowing dresses and swirling colours of folklórico are the main influence of the visuals of the book, while the struggle of finding an identity for second generation immigrant teenagers, something that I observe in my own children as a German in England, are the main interest for the text.

Like the girl in the story, the book visually combines traditional with modern elements.

The edition is handbound and distributed in an open edition.
