Magic House
The book is made from Waterford watercolour paper coloured with applied industrial textile dyes and with pen and ink line work. It is loosely based on ‘Beauty and the Beast’, an accordion book in a box pubished by Walker Books in 1983 and on 19th Century ‘novelty’ toy theatres. As the pages are joined by dovetail hinges they can all be detached and the order re-arranged.
It is inspired by the manor houses illustrated in medieval books of hours and Kay Nielsen’s 1920s fairy tale children’s book illustrations. Early Walt Disney cartoon moves also figured in the way I conceived the artwork and the piped decorations on party cakes in the Waitrose supermarket in the next street to where I live in Manchester also played a part!
