Winged
This was the first book I produced for The Bookband Art collaboration. I completed an online workshop with the London Drawing Centre on Matisse, looking at the way he used cut paper shapes to create art works. Following further research into his work I discovered his cut out and simplified bird shapes. I decided to take this idea and used different sizes and shapes of triangle to create my own birds.
I wanted to incorporate movement into this book and so landed on the idea of pop-up and a flock of birds taking flight. The book only consists of one double spread page and end papers. The mechanism for the pop-up is a basic acute angle V fold, with 3 of these one behind the other.
The first step was to create the birds. Having got the basic shapes using the cut triangles I then cut these from a white card and tracing paper. These were then mounted onto a second piece of card, which was cut through to create the spaces in between the birds. The bird shapes were also cut in black and placed on the surface of the pages to create shadows of the birds taking to the air.
The same shapes were then overlapped and used to create a plate from which I printed the end papers. The cover uses the same bird shape cut from two pieces of book cloth which are slotted together. It measures 41.5 x 28.5 x 0.7cm.
