FAQs for Artists

What sort of books are accepted?

We specialise in artists’ books that have been created explicitly as works of art, either one-off pieces or editions. We do not accept journals, blank books, altered books or designer bookbindings.

Who can submit?

Any artist can make a submission, but Fevered Imagination reserves the right to determine if the work fulfils the concept of an artist’s book and is appropriate for the gallery.

Why do I have to provide a video?

This is our unique selling point. An artist’s book is made to be handled, and in most situations, especially in exhibitions, this interaction is entirely missing. Fevered Imagination encourages artists to display their work as though to an interested buyer or collector, directly handling and describing the work. We want to engage the viewer in the artist’s passion.

Must I provide a commentary with the video

Yes. This is your opportunity to communicate your enthusiasm about your work, to draw the attention of your audience to its structure and movement, and to tell the story of how it was created.

All videos will be captioned so that they can be watched silently or by hearing impaired people, but if you don’t have the technology to do that, we will do it for you.

Do I have to have the video professionally made?

No – you can make your own on a mobile phone or other device, as long as the quality is good. We offer guidelines for doing this. It is more important that the viewer can experience the way the book moves, opens, sounds, transforms or otherwise engages people.

Do I have to pay to exhibit my work?

No. Work that is accepted is displayed on the website and promoted there and in social media. If you make a sale, Fevered Imagination will take a 15% commission to cover running costs and maybe make a small profit one day! Please price your work to allow for this commission.

Do you sell internationally?

Yes. However, Fevered Imagination exists specifically to promote UK-based book artists and the concept of artists’ books within the UK.  But we hope to expand!

If I by a book and I don’t like it when it arrives, can I return it?

If you feel the book does not meet the expectations set by the online gallery, you must report that to Fevered Imagination immediately.  You have two weeks in which to return the book to the artist. The cost and postage will be refunded only as long as the book is returned in perfect condition. Fevered Imagination will act as intermediary between you and the artist to discuss the matter.

If I buy a book and it is damaged on receipt, can I return it?

You can return a damaged book within two weeks for a full refund of the price and all postage. However, you may wish to discuss the possibility that the artist could repair or replace the item, and Fevered Imagination will liaise between the parties to come to an agreement on this.

WHAT IS AN ARTIST’S BOOK?

Perhaps the most frequently asked question!

Here is a response given by ChatGPT

An artist’s book is a work of art in book form, created by an artist or a group of artists. It is a form of contemporary art that combines the traditional format of a book with the artistic expression and creativity of the artist.

Unlike conventional books, artists’ books are often unique, handmade or produced in small editions, and are designed to be viewed as works of art. They may feature unconventional materials, binding techniques, and innovative layouts that challenge the traditional structure of a book. Artists’ books can take many forms, including scrolls, pop-ups, accordion folds and even sculptures  that incorporate text and or images.

Artists’ books can be found in collections of museums and libraries around the world, and have become an important medium for artists to express their ideas and showcase their creativity.

Why is it called Fevered Imagination?

Fevered Imagination was started by Frances Day, a book artist from the English Cotswolds, to address the widespread lack of appreciation and understanding of the art-form, particularly within the UK. The idea arose from endless conversations with other artists, and resulted in many sleepless nights as the idea swirled around. When it was time to file some ideas in a folder, that folder was named Fevered Imagination. The name stuck.
