This is a hand made book with original mono prints and text. The size is A5, when folded and it is a concertina structure. It is illustrated with prints depicting the layers of earth, which form the bog. The text describes the way in which trees are drawn down into the dark acid soil and the fossils and treasures which are enveloped in the damp earth over many centuries – skeletons, tools, even preserved butter. The cover of the book is a dark brown handmade paper, which has a rough texture, like crumbled earth and the...

Tree House
A ninety-degree unique pop-up. As it is designed to be seen in the round, like sculpture, my aim was to make it pleasing from whatever angle it is viewed, including from above.
The book is made from Waterford watercolour paper coloured with applied industrial textile dyes and additional pen and ink line work. As each part is a separate unit held together with paper dovetail joints, the whole form can be taken to pieces and rearranged. The sections move about more freely than if they were glued together and so by gently moving...
The Persistence of Life

The Persistence of Life
The Persistence of Life
I started to make a book based on the great mass extinctions in the history of the Earth. I decided on the format of a “border book” so that the tale of the extinctions is described on small pages in the centre, but the structure then opens up into a big picture, which shows the wheel of Evolution and our tiny place in the taxonomy of life.
The images are manipulated from photographs taken at the volcanic geysers and sink holes in Yellowstone National Park although the colours there are so vivid I didn’t need to...

Fibonacci
After seeing a gif that described the motion of elements in the Fibonacci sequence as they describe a circle, I knew I had to make a book that did the same thing.
This is a series of books from 1 cm square to 21 cm square, joined together in a manner that allows them to be moved to mimic the gif. Each book has a fold-out that contains an image that has been generated from two or more natural objects that display a Fibonacci sequence as a major characteristic: the largest is an overlay of hurricanes, and the smallest is a butterfly’s...

No Thing So Ordinary
This book is inspired by a quotation from the physicist Lee Smolin and features digitally created images of ordinary things, such as water and magnetic fields, and highlights quotations from other scientists over the centuries who have found wonder, joy and inspiration from the study of such things.
Printed on Bockingford watercolour paper, this book is bound with a piano hinge that disassembles to reveal a hidden internal structure and message. The hinge is a glass test tube, which is to be filled by the...

Feliz dia de los Muertos
My initial idea for this book was to create a shrine, but after several maquettes it developed into this cabinet. It tells the story of the Mexican festival of Day of the Dead, which takes place on the 1st and 2nd of November. Researching the subject took me back 3000 years to its origins in Pre-Colombian Mesoamerica and rituals of honouring the dead.
Each of the four pages tells part of the story of Day of the Dead from its origins to present day celebrations. Page one is filled with cut paper Monarch...

Winged
This was the first book I produced for The Bookband Art collaboration. I completed an online workshop with the London Drawing Centre on Matisse, looking at the way he used cut paper shapes to create art works. Following further research into his work I discovered his cut out and simplified bird shapes. I decided to take this idea and used different sizes and shapes of triangle to create my own birds.
I wanted to incorporate movement into this book and so landed on the idea of pop-up and a flock of birds taking flight. The book...
