The edition is digitally reproduced from a prototype with screen-printed background pages, with the text flowing in bubbles over the page and a cover from stitched together warp-faced woven bands. The story is told in the form of a screenplay and its main character is Isabella from Sheffield. She just finished school, and it’s her dream to make it as a contemporary dancer, while her parents would prefer for her to go to university and study – maybe law. When her grandmother dies, she leaves her a task which leads to Isabella...

The Smiley Oracle
The Smiley Oracle works like this: You pose a question, you open the book at a random page, and you see a smiley (well, not all of them are actually smiling). This face is then interpreted as an answer to your question. With this work I wanted to investigate the relation between the contents of a book, and how they can vary from reader to reader. The Smiley Oracle is a toy, and a book art object. The edition is limited to 16. The books are numbered and signed. Each one has a unique combination of colours. Together...

Absences
A6, accordion book. pages and covers hand decorated with gesso and acrylics using stencils, text handwritten. The paper from which the pages are made is toned, and the white background is painted on with gesso – with shapes missed out, showing the shape of a missing fork, knife, spoon, … The text is handwritten using pastel pencils in two colours for the two speakers in this dialogue. Absences is the title of my own flash fiction story: A woman speaks with a police officer about mysterious disappearances in her flat....

Of Riches & Rags – A Reading of the Financial Times
Of Riches & Rags – A Reading of the Financial Times
The books consists of a series of photographs showing individual pages of the Financial Times placed on a lightbox.
As a flimsy, low-quality paper, newsprint has a number of drawbacks, one such being its semi-transparency: there is always the chance that pictures and text printed on one side of the paper will show through and interfere with the matter overleaf. Yet this apparent flaw has considerable potential that has rarely been explored or highlighted....

Gathered Gatherings
A one-off handmade book with an online printed A6 limited edition. The handmade book is a traditional hardback book made for the theme Gather and exploring the things we collect and hold onto that are both worthless and priceless. The core theme of the book is one that recurs in my work, where mundane collections of fairly incidental items become imbued with intrinsic meaning and carry signifiers for memories of close family members no longer alive. The challenge is to explore personal issues of identity...

Rain: as if life wasn’t hard enough already
An online printed limited edition.
Originally an A5 handmade book for the Stroud Artists Book group meeting on the theme of ‘Rain’.
The book is my response to Albert Camus’s response to the Myth of Sisyphus. Taking inspiration from Camus’s book using painted backgrounds and collaged images in an attempt to reference the story of Sisyphus to all our lives, our daily lot and how we manage the many vicissitudes of life.

Eh is not for Apple
A handmade second edition of an earlier handmade book which was processed into an online printed limited edition made in response to the theme Alphabet.
The book reflects personal and professional experience with the emotional fallout from experiences with text and literacy. The book was an opportunity to play with the established form of flash cards and our familiarity with entry level reading schemes. This handmade book presents as a traditional hardback with a drum leaf binding which facilitates engagement...
